As part of the comprehensive Lincoln Yards project, Pentagram was commissioned to design an interior code signage system that would provide building-specific flexibility for each structure on the 55-acre site, while maintaining overall cohesion across all buildings. I was responsible for creating this system and developing the code signage guidelines for use by future sign consultants.
The system was designed to be straightforward, establishing rules that guide proportions, graphic layout and typography, while allowing for context-specific flexibility. This approach ensured that the signage families integrated seamlessly with their respective architectural environments.
The golden rectangle was used to establish sign proportions.
Starting with the Room ID, a graphic layout was designed and a system of standard and flexible elements was established.
A proof of concept was developed to demonstrate how the system's standard elements and flexible design features offer a multitude of design possibilities while ensuring cohesiveness across various families.
