Brightline Miami Central is a modern transportation hub that serves as the main terminal for Brightline's high-speed rail service in Miami. Located in the heart of downtown Miami, the facility connects passengers to a range of destinations across Florida, including Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. The station features contemporary design elements and amenities aimed at enhancing the travel experience, such as retail spaces, dining options, and efficient ticketing services.
Pentagram was commissioned to create an innovative lighting experience for the hub to enhance the terminal's ambiance and functionality. In this project, my role involved designing and visualizing conceptual frameworks for the interactive lighting system, which included developing visual ideas that would engage and guide passengers through the space while adding a dynamic and aesthetically pleasing element to the terminal environment. Additionally, I was responsible for researching and selecting the appropriate technology for the project, ultimately choosing GKD Mediamesh for its ability to integrate with our design vision. I also wrote the rough order of magnitude (ROM) to outline the project's scope, budget, and technical requirements, ensuring that the implementation aligned with our conceptual goals.
The client selected two final design options for the lighting experience, both of which were designed to respond directly to the high-speed train's approach. One option incorporated dynamic lighting at the crown that could adjust to accommodate various advertising opportunities, and another with static lighting that provided a steady and uniform illumination. Each option was designed to offer distinct benefits, enhancing both the visual appeal and functional versatility of the terminal.
